AND then there was light... New floodlights have been switched on at Fulford Tennis Club after an upgrade of the courts.

Club members, pictured from left, Mike Johnson, Michael Carter, Ray Mills and Keith Watson had a game to celebrate the official switch on.

The York club installed the original lights 30 years ago at the instigation of then chairman Harold Blackburn, enabling evening tennis to be played all year round.

Blackburn and other club members dug holes, put up telegraph poles and cut trenches to help the electrical contractor who fitted the lights.

The chairman also donated a Floodlight Trophy, which is still played for every October.

The worn telegraph poles have now been replaced with aluminium columns and fitted with sodium lights by electrical contractor Shaun Batchelor.
