FULFORD Tennis Club duo Sean Evans and Emily Garland retained their Under-16s Peter Terry Trophy at Rowntree Park.

The final of the IT Sports York and District Mixed Doubles Tennis League tournament was a hard-fought contest, with Evans and Garland beating Poppleton duo Michael Evans and Hannah Chambers 5-2.

The Garland family have had their name on the trophy for four successive years after Emily's sister, Faye, won in 2005 and 2006.

The tournament featured ten pairs playing in two groups, with the runners-up in each group beating the group winners in the semi-finals.

League president Malcolm Huntington presented the trophy and praised the "particularly high standard of tennis".

The other pairs taking part were Angus and Eleanor Bradshaw, of Fulford, St Peter's School's Dominic Shread and Victoria Herrenschmitt, Xavier and Sophie Edmonds-Alley, of Heworth, Poppleton's Matt Donohue and Lauren Caley, Ben Foster and Anna Bradshaw, of Fulford, and Poppleton pair George Chambers and Charlotte Worsman.

Results: semi-finals (best of seven games): Sean Evans and Emily Garland (Fulford) bt Pat Evans and Rebecca Turnbull (Poppleton) 4-2; Michael Evans and Hannah Chambers (Poppleton) bt Nick Turnbull and Sophie Worsman (Poppleton) 4-1; final (best of nine games): Evans and Garland bt Evans and Chambers 5-2.

The boys' Under-12 singles crown went to Sean Evans, who beat Tom Craddock 5-4 in the final, while Simon Jarrett-Smith took the Under-14 title by the same score over Matthew Evans.

Tom Walker beat Arran tate 6 - 3 in the Under-16 final. Tom Craddock and Liam Hansey won 7 - 2 in the Under-12 doubles against Liam Hessay and Angus Bradshaw. The Evans brothers, Sean and Matthew, took the Under-14 doubles by beating Simon Jarrett-Smith and Edwin Gibb 6 - 3.

Arran tate and Stewart Low lost out to Tom Walker and Simon Jarrett-Smith in the Under-16s.

The girls' events were made into Under-16 round robin singles in which Faye Garland ousted Sophie Evans 5 - 4.
